Debate and Discussion

Got something to say?
Join us at an event, download a public lecture or share your thoughts online. With an alumni community as diverse as ours, the discussions and debates are sure to be lively, challenging and invigorating.
While traditional dinner party etiquette advises against discussing taboo topics, the Melbourne Alumni Conversations thwart convention by creating an environment ripe for livened debate from entrée to dessert.
Run monthly in Carlton, Melbourne, each conversation is led by an alumnus – it could be an artist, musician, designer, business leader or politician.

Students and alumni from Engineering and Law return on 1 September 2011 to argue and amuse as they debate the big issue: ‘Lawyers Or Engineers: Who creates the future?’
Register to come along and support your favoured team as they attempt to entertain and outwit their traditional rivals. The debate is part of the Graduate School of Engineering's 150th Celebrations.
Melbourne University Magazine online
The annual Melbourne University Magazine (MUM) has provided a forum for alumni, staff and students to share their experiences and ideas with the community, and enter into dialogues with great thinkers beyond campus walls.
You can join these conversations via the MUM website or our Facebook Page, and have your say on this year’s features on food security, leadership, student housing or whatever other topic inspires, infuriates or engages you.
Festival of Ideas
The university’s biannual Festival of Ideas brings together great thinkers to discuss ideas and issues affecting us all. In 2011, the festival tackled the theme of identity in contemporary Australia, specifically how the distinctive landscapes have shaped national identity and been depicted by artists throughout time.
All lectures and discussions are now available to stream online or to download as a digital video.
